Programme notes: | When Craig Sylvern told me he likes playing tenor and Chris Swist said he has a five-octave marimba, I thought of low notes. Loud, long, plenty of rumble. Next, the sax plays a couple of ostinato lines with interesting rhythms, while the marimba's melodies unwind beneath. I thought of this as reversing the obvious roles of sax/melody with marimba/accompaniment. As the piece builds, there are places where the two instruments switch roles, or play equally prominent lines in counterpoint. This is all a rather technical explanation of a piece that really developed fairly organically and I hope sounds that way. |
