Cunningham’s Trigon is for tenor saxophone and piano. The first movement is intense and assertive, primarily in cut time with a great deal of interplay between the saxophone and piano, and it includes one altissimo G. The second movement is lyrical, with the challenge presented in controlling the dynamics and pitch. The third movement is technically challenging, in part because of the tempo (running sixteenth-notes at quarter-note = 152), and can be challenging to coordinate with the piano in sections. It includes occasional passages asking for “a very high note,” pitch not specified.
