Programme notes:This piece is inspired by Amy Johnson's pioneering and record breaking flight to Australia in 1930. I have recently completed an opera about Amy, and this work uses and develops some of the themes from it. David Hockney's A Bigger PIcture exhibition, which includes paintings of Amy's home county, also provided inspiration. The title refers to a perfume that was named after Amy: one of many tributes to her success.
Performance notes:Sarcanthus was commissioned by saxophonist Matt London and generously funded by an RVW Trust commission award. Premiered by Matt London [saxophone] at the World Saxophone Congress XVI, St Leonards Auditorium, St Andrews July 2012.
