Programme notes: | Out of Line grows out of a single melodic line played by the tenor saxophone and piano in unison and the musical material for the whole piece is derived from this opening idea. Throughout the piece certain flows of music or grooves are set up, only for one part to move ?out of line?, thus creating some kind of conflict and forcing the music to transform into a new state. Only at the very end of the work is the opening idea recaptured. |
Performance notes: | The harmonics in the piano part in the section from bar 229 to bar 240 are achieved by playing the lower note at the keyboard with one hand whilst stopping the string with the other hand behind the dampers so that the upper note of the harmonic is produced.
For Andy Scott. Out of Line was first performed by Andy Scott and Adam Caird at the Woodend Barn Arts Centre, Banchory as part of the Sound Festival in November 2007. |
