The Upward Stream, written for tenor saxophone and orchestra is a substantial and challenging piece needing a high level of technical facility as well as control of the altissimo register, including an optional altissimo F. It is in three movements, including a lengthy cadenza in movement II, and it builds in intensity through the bulk of the piece. |
Performance notes: | The Upward Stream, concerto for tenor saxophone and orchestra, was commissioned by the Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra, Peter Perret, Music Director, with funding provided by the North Carolina Arts Council, and is dedicated to tenor saxophonist James Houlik, who was soloist at the premiere, the European premiere, and the first recording of the concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra. |
