Programme notes:KBM is a virtuosic showcase for saxophonists who display a musical open-mindedness and understanding of different musical styles and genres. The piece alternates between two ideas; one a flurry of arpeggios reaching into harmonics, the other an intricate swing idea in 6/8. An optional coda is included as a two-bar vamp 'walk off'. Contrast the rhythmic freeness of the opening section idea with a metronomic approach to the 6/8 swing, every time the two ideas appear. If appropriate (and musically comfortable) to the performance occasion, improvise around the two-bar vamp at the end of the piece at will.
Performance notes:KBM was commissioned to celebrate the 18th birthday of Kyran Matthews.
